Salisbury Cathedral stands tall within its large walled precinct populated by the Bishop's Palace and many similar grand houses. John Constable painted the cathedral from many viewpoints and in different weather conditions and viewed this as the most technically demanding landscape he had attempted at the time. His best known work in this series was 'Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop’s Grounds' (1823) commissioned by the then bishop. The large painting was a major factor in establishing Constable's reputation in the Royal Academy. My own painting reflected this imposing view from a significant venue with the cloudless sky of full summer.
